Hungary, which took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union with the acronym HU24EU, with the slogan “Make Europe Great Again” and with 7 goals, is trying to maintain its relations with Brussels after many issues that have put it at odds with the European Union.
The Presidency of the Commission of the European Union, which is taken over by a new country every year, is in Hungary this term after Belgium, and the post will last until December 31, 2024. The Hungarian President emphasized the importance of the European Union during the inauguration ceremony in Brussels: “The European Union is a remarkable and unique economic and political union. Less than a state, but more than a simple alliance.”
Hungary, which will preside for the second half of 2024, has 7 goals. A new European Competitiveness Consensus, strengthening EU defense policy, a coherent and merit-based enlargement policy, the fight against illegal migration, the future of cohesion policy, EU agricultural policy, and demographic challenges are not very different from what Hungary complains about in the European Union.
With Mark Rutte taking over as NATO Secretary General, Trump’s possible presidency and Hungary assuming the presidency of the Council of the EU, the second half of 2024 could be a period in which we could see Europe assume a more active role against Russia.
